Content Strategy Basics

Posting without a strategy is like driving without a map. You might stumble upon something interesting, but you will waste a lot of time and fuel getting there. A content strategy gives you direction, consistency, and a framework for measuring what works.

Content Pillars

Content pillars are the three to five core themes that define what you post about. They keep your content focused and help your audience know what to expect from you. For example, a fitness coach might have these pillars:

  • Workout tips — exercise demonstrations, routines, form corrections
  • Nutrition — meal prep ideas, recipes, supplement advice
  • Motivation — transformation stories, mindset shifts, accountability
  • Behind the scenes — daily life, gym setup, personal updates

Every piece of content you create should fall under one of your pillars. This prevents you from posting randomly and ensures your feed tells a coherent story about who you are and what you offer.

Content Types

Not all content serves the same purpose. Understanding the different types helps you create a balanced mix:

Educational content teaches your audience something useful. Tutorials, how-to guides, tips, and explainers fall into this category. Educational content builds trust and positions you as an authority.

Entertaining content makes people laugh, feel inspired, or simply enjoy the moment. Memes, trending audio, funny stories, and relatable observations keep your audience engaged and coming back.

Inspirational content motivates your audience to take action or believe in a possibility. Success stories, personal journeys, and aspirational messages create emotional connections.

Promotional content directly sells your product, service, or offer. This is necessary but should be used sparingly.

The 80/20 Rule

A common guideline is the 80/20 rule: roughly 80 percent of your content should provide value through education, entertainment, or inspiration, while only 20 percent should be directly promotional. When you constantly provide value, your audience is far more receptive when you do make an ask.

Some creators adjust this to 90/10 or 70/30 depending on their niche, but the principle remains the same. Lead with value, sell second.

Planning vs Spontaneity

A good strategy balances planned content with room for spontaneity. Plan your pillar-based content in advance using a content calendar, but leave space to react to trends, news, or personal moments that feel authentic.

Planned content ensures consistency. Spontaneous content keeps you human and relevant. The best creators blend both seamlessly.

Getting Started

Write down your three to five content pillars. For each pillar, brainstorm ten content ideas. You now have up to fifty pieces of content to draw from. Organize these into a simple weekly plan, aiming for a mix of educational, entertaining, and inspirational posts. Start executing and refine as you learn what resonates with your audience.
