Reels Strategy

Reels are Instagram's primary growth tool. They are the format most likely to be shown to non-followers, making them essential for anyone looking to expand their audience. A strong Reels strategy combines compelling hooks, smart audio choices, and editing techniques that keep viewers watching.

Audio plays a significant role in Reels discovery. When a sound is trending, Instagram actively promotes Reels that use it, which can dramatically increase your reach.

How to find and use trending audio:

  • Browse the Reels tab and look for the small arrow icon next to audio names, which indicates a trending sound.
  • Save audio you like as you scroll. Build a library of sounds you can match to future content ideas.
  • Match the audio to your message. Do not force a trending sound onto content where it does not fit. The best-performing Reels feel natural, not forced.
  • Act quickly. Trending audio has a lifespan. When you spot a trend that fits your niche, create and post your version within a day or two.

You can also use original audio, especially for talking-head content. Original audio works well when your message is strong enough to carry the Reel without musical or entertainment support.

Hook Patterns

The first three seconds of a Reel determine whether someone watches or scrolls. You must hook the viewer immediately.

Proven hook patterns for Reels:

  • Text on screen with a bold claim. "This one change doubled my engagement." The viewer reads it and stays to learn more.
  • Pattern interrupt. Start with unexpected movement, a visual surprise, or a change in scenery that catches the eye.
  • Direct address. Look at the camera and say something that targets your audience specifically: "If you are a freelancer struggling to find clients, watch this."
  • Before and after. Show the end result first to create curiosity about the process.
  • Countdown or list teaser. "Three things I wish I knew before starting my business. Number three changed everything."

Write your hook before filming the rest of the Reel. If the hook is weak, the rest of the content does not matter because no one will see it.

Ideal Length

Reels can be up to 90 seconds, but shorter is often better. The algorithm values completion rate, which means a 15-second Reel that gets watched fully will often outperform a 60-second Reel where half the viewers drop off.

General guidelines:

  • 7 to 15 seconds for entertainment, trend-based, and quick-tip content
  • 30 to 60 seconds for educational content, mini-tutorials, and storytelling
  • 60 to 90 seconds only for content that genuinely requires the length to deliver value

When in doubt, edit shorter. Remove any moments where the energy dips or the content feels padded.

Editing Tips

You do not need professional editing software. Instagram's built-in editor and apps like CapCut provide everything you need.

Key editing practices:

  • Use jump cuts to eliminate dead air and keep the pace tight.
  • Add transitions between scenes to maintain visual interest. Simple transitions like zooming in or cutting on movement work well.
  • Include b-roll to illustrate your points. If you are talking about working from a coffee shop, cut to footage of the coffee shop.
  • Adjust clip speed to speed up slow moments and keep energy high.

Text Overlays

Text on screen serves multiple purposes. It reinforces your spoken message, helps silent viewers follow along, and acts as a visual hook in the first few seconds.

Best practices for text overlays:

  • Use large, readable fonts. Avoid thin or decorative fonts that are hard to read on small screens.
  • Place text in the center of the frame to avoid being cut off by the interface elements at the top and bottom of the Reels viewer.
  • Time your text to match your speech. Text that appears and disappears in sync with what you are saying creates a polished feel.
  • Use auto-captions for accessibility. CapCut and Instagram both offer automatic caption generation that you can customize.
