Social media is a visual-first environment. No matter how good your caption is, people decide whether to stop scrolling based on what they see. Strong visual content does not require a design degree. It requires understanding a few principles and using the right tools.

Image Sizing by Platform

Each platform has optimal dimensions. Using the wrong size leads to awkward cropping and unprofessional results.

  • Instagram feed post: 1080 x 1080 pixels (square) or 1080 x 1350 pixels (portrait, recommended because it takes up more screen space)
  • Instagram Stories and Reels: 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16 vertical)
  • LinkedIn post: 1200 x 1200 pixels (square) or 1200 x 628 pixels (landscape)
  • X post: 1600 x 900 pixels (landscape, 16:9 ratio)
  • YouTube thumbnail: 1280 x 720 pixels (16:9 ratio)
  • TikTok: 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16 vertical)

Most scheduling and design tools have these templates built in, so you rarely need to remember exact numbers. But knowing the ratios helps when planning your layouts.

Canva Basics

Canva is the most accessible design tool for non-designers. It offers thousands of templates, drag-and-drop editing, and a free tier that covers most needs.

To get started with Canva:

  1. Choose a template that matches your platform and content type. Search by format like "Instagram carousel" or "LinkedIn post."
  2. Customize with your brand — swap in your colors, fonts, and logo. Save these as a Brand Kit for quick access.
  3. Keep it simple. Resist the urge to use every effect and element. The best social media graphics are clean, readable, and focused on one key message.
  4. Use hierarchy. Make your headline the largest text element. Supporting text should be smaller. Ensure there is enough contrast between text and background for readability.

Brand Consistency

Visual consistency helps your audience recognize your content instantly, even before reading your name. Establish a simple visual identity:

  • Two to three brand colors — Use them repeatedly across all your graphics.
  • One or two fonts — A bold font for headlines and a clean font for body text.
  • Consistent layout patterns — If your carousels always have a bold title slide with a colored background, people will start recognizing them in their feed.
  • Photo style — If you use photography, maintain a consistent editing style. Consistent lighting, filters, and composition create a cohesive feed.

You do not need a full brand guide to start. Just pick your colors and fonts, and commit to using them for at least a few months.

Carousels are among the highest-performing content formats on Instagram and LinkedIn. They encourage swipes, which count as engagement, and allow you to deliver more depth than a single image.

Tips for effective carousels:

  • Start with a strong cover slide that works as a hook. Treat it like a headline.
  • One idea per slide. Keep text minimal and use large, readable fonts.
  • End with a CTA slide asking readers to save, share, comment, or follow.
  • Use five to ten slides. Fewer feels incomplete. More can lose attention.

Infographics

Infographics condense complex information into a visual format. They perform well because they are save-worthy and shareable. Use them to present statistics, step-by-step processes, comparisons, or timelines. Keep the design clean, use icons and charts to replace long text blocks, and always cite your data sources when presenting statistics.
